Comparing Honor and Bravery in Beowulf and Sir Gawain and...

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Beowulf share several similar qualities. Each story suggests that honor, truth, and heroism are the most important a person can exhibit, though in each tale these are manifested in different ways. Both characters, in attempts to keep these values, make mistakes that endanger their lives. Beowulf is an incredible, and at times unbelievable, hero who can and will attempt to defeat anyone to keep others safe. This will eventually lead to his death as he successfully defeats the Dragon. But as ruling king at the time his subsequent death leaves his people in a worse predicament than before. The purpose of this document is to help you to develop these skills by acting as a handy reference during the Academic Development module and the rest of your course. Effective written communication depends on adapting your writing to the circumstances, to the nature of the message and, above all, to the requirements of the reader. For this reason, you will need to use many different forms of communication in your career. You may need to write business or technical reports, business letters, memos, instruction manuals and so on. This guide concentrates on only one of these, the technical or business report. However, the principles set out here apply to many other types of communication. The important elements in effective report writing are the planning and general organisation of the report, the structure of the content, the style of writing, the presentation of numerical and graphical data and the use of references. Each of these will be covered in the pages that follow. 1 2 2. 1 PREPARATION Introduction How do you set about writing your report? Before writing the report you must identify the purpose, plan the contents and research the material. 2. 2 Purpose Consider who the report is being written for. A college assignment for the module tutor will be read from cover to cover and will assess your understanding of the subject. However, in industry it is likely that some people won’t have time to read the full report so will only read the summary and conclusions. Therefore you need to assess who the report is written for and what they are going to do with it. Another key point to consider is why you are writing the report. A report should always have a clear objective. Before you start writing ask yourself: why do they want it; what is the purpose; what do they want it to cover; what do they not want it to cover? . 3 Planning Writing reports involves gathering facts. It is essential to start off by brainstorming what you have been asked to do. A simple method of doing this is to write down, in the centre of a plain piece of paper, the most important word or short phrase, then write down any ideas that link to the purpose of the report. (See Mind Mapping Study Guide on Moodle) . 2. 4 Research (a) Preparing to do your research Before looking up references, sketch out the main things that you are looking for. This helps to make the research more purposeful, and can save you going off at a tangent or getting distracted. You will, of course, find out things which change your original outline. (b) Doing the research Take notes from as many different sources as you practically can – books, journals, magazines, internet documents, etc. Useful Tips (1) Write your notes on a separate piece of paper or card index card for each reference. This allows you to sort them out into a logical order later on to match the structure of the report. (2) For each reference, write down full details of author, title, chapter, date, etc. This can save lots of time when you come to write your reference list, as you won’t have to go back to the original documents. Section 7 ) 2 3 3. 1 CONTENTS OF A REPORT Introduction Technical and business reports are normally divided into a series of sections which have distinct and well recognised functions. These sections, in order of presentation, are the summary, introduction, main body of the work, the discussion (or interpretation) and the conclusion. They may be follow ed by a list of references and appendices. The functions of each of these sections are described below. 3. 2 Title page The title page highlights the central theme of the report and ncludes the title, author’s name, date and, if necessary, the name of the person or organisation who commissioned the report. 3. 3 Contents Page The contents page is a list of all your chapters, sections, headings, sub headings, appendices and illustrations. All but the shortest of reports should have a contents page. 3. 4 Summary The purpose of the summary is to give a very brief outline of the rest of the report for people who do not want to read the whole of it, or who want to know what is in the report before reading it. The acid test is whether the content of the report is clear to someone who reads only the summary. The summary should, therefore, contain such information (from the introduction, main text, discussion and conclusion) that is needed to comprehend the contents fully. The summary should be: (a) written after the rest of the report; (b) presented at the start of the report; (c) factual, concise, and in an appropriate style. (see Section 5 in this guide) The summary should not be a re-statement of the conclusion 3. 5 Introduction The purpose of the introduction is to tell the reader what the aim of the work is and how you are going to tackle it (see also Section 4. 3). In other words, you must tell the reader: (a) what you are going to write about, (b) why you are going to write about it, (c) how you are going to deal with it. 3 The introduction should, therefore, include a brief general background to the topic or task, a statement of the purpose of the work and an indication of the structure of the rest of the report. It may also include a statement to indicate related areas that you are not going to deal with (â€Å"a consideration of x and y is outside the scope of this work†). The introduction should be: (a) brief (for a typical course assignment, ? 1 side), (b) clear and concise, (c) stimulating. 3. 6 Main Body of the Text (but don’t put this as a heading! ) Go back to Section 1 of the report: does this introduction satisfy these criteria? The main body of the text should be arranged under a series of headings according to the purpose of the work. For example, if the work is a scientific investigation, or a survey of some sort, t he headings may be: Materials and Methods Results Discussion (See Useful Tip below) A similar structure can be adopted for a whole range of task-based reports. For example, if you had to report to the farm manager on the reorganisation of the farm office, you might use headings such as: Methods Used In The Investigation Findings Alternative Courses of Action On the other hand, you may simply be required to review a topic – say the sheep industry in the UK. In this case the text may be divided by headings such as: Organisation of The Sheep Industry Breeds Production Systems Marketing There is, of course, a whole range of other ways of organising the material, but however you do it, the importance of a clear logical system cannot be overemphasised. This is discussed further in Section 5. Useful Tips: Discussion (Have as a heading if separate section) The discussion is probably the most difficult section of a scientific report to write, but it is very important. In the discussion you should attempt to evaluate (comment critically) on the information presented in the main text. If, for example, you have come across any inconsistencies in the information presented, you should weigh up the evidence for each argument within the discussion. If you have carried out your own research it is here you should compare your results with those of other published authors and, if the results differ, offer explanations for the differences. The good news is that once you have reached the end of the discussion, you should know exactly what your 4 conclusions are! 3. 7 Conclusion The purpose of the conclusion is to draw out the message from the work and to suggest what the consequences of that message are. It must be distinguished from the summary (which encapsulates the whole report) but should be included in it. In other words, the conclusion should say: (a) what the body of the work tells us; (b) what should be done about it (action, further research, etc. ). Thus, your conclusion on the reorganisation of the farm office might say, for example, that: â€Å"action x is the best alternative† and â€Å"this should be implemented in the next two months† Don’t be worried if your conclusion is short – provided you have discussed / interpreted the topic fully, a short conclusion helps the reader to understand. 3. 8 References References should be listed after the conclusion, but before the appendices. Correct presentation of references is important and is described in Section 7. 3. 9 Appendices Appendices are used to present material which is not necessary to an understanding of the report, but which may be helpful to the reader. By removing such inessential material (for example, extensive sets of data or supplementary information) from the body of the work, the communication is made simpler, shorter and clearer. 3. 10 Word / page limits Many assignment briefs have a word / page limit stated; if it is a word limit, you will need to include an accurate word count in your completed work. In order to do this you must ensure that your writing has a logical structure and that this structure is displayed to the reader by a whole series of signposts. These aspects are explained in this section. 4. 2 Structure: Unity and Sequence A logical structure requires two things: unity and sequence. The concept of unity is not an easy one to explain. To achieve unity, it is necessary to separate the various discrete elements of what you want to say into self-contained packages. One way of doing this is to create a mind map that identifies key areas and their relationships while helping you to plan the project. Start by writing the central theme in the middle of the paper, and working outwards. It is then necessary to decide on a logical sequence for these sections and paragraphs. The sequence depends on the subject matter and the approach. For example it may be: in chronological order (e. g. description of the breeding cycle of sheep or a new product development process); in descending order of importance (e. g. factors affecting the yield of wheat or factors affecting food purchase); in ascending order of importance leading to a conclusion (e. . argument of a case). However, you should aim to present your ideas in an ordered sequence so that a reader will follow the line of reasoning without difficulty. Determining the best sequence is not always an easy task, especially when dealing with complex subjects. If in doubt discuss your plan with your personal or module tutor – they will be happy to help you thi nk it out. 4. 3 Clarity: the use of signposts To make your writing easy to read it is important to provide frequent signposts that tell the reader where s/he is and where s/he is going. Some of the signposts you can use are listed below. a) Title Each piece of work should have a clear descriptive title that gives a guide to the content of the work. You should avoid â€Å"journalistic† titles that tell you little. Thus, â€Å"The Prevention and Control of Mastitis in the Dairy Herd† is preferable to â€Å"Getting to Grips with Mastitis†! Contents Page All but the shortest of reports should have a contents page. Introduction The introduction should tell the reader what you are going to deal with and how. In longer reports you may use an introduction in each section. Headings Headings and sub-headings should be used freely in technical and business writing. You may have been told not to use heading in English essays, but this does not hold in technical and business reports where headings are very helpful in making your meaning clear. For this reason it is important that the heading system reflects the structure of the report. You should, therefore, adopt a system of headings and sub-headings that show the relationships of the various sections. Useful Tips There is a range of different systems of headings and notation you can use. But remember whichever you use, always be consistent throughout the report. 5 5. 1 STYLE Introduction Do not be frightened by the use of the word â€Å"style†. Style simply means the way you use words and sentences in your writing. The style of effective reports is direct, simple and straightforward. This is easy to say but more difficult to achieve: as George Bernard Shaw once wrote: â€Å"I am sorry to have written such a long letter but I did not have time to write a short one. † Some rules to help you follow. 5. 2 Words and Sentences George Orwell wrote some helpful rules for scientists who write. He said: a) â€Å"never use two words when one word will do, b) never use a big word when a small one will do, c) never use a long sentence when a short one will do†. Never use numbers when you can use a picture (a diagram or graph): pictures are clearer than numbers; numbers are clearer than prose and both save words. But always remember tables and diagrams do need some words of explanation. (Section 6) 5. 5 Presentation Be aware that poorly laid out work, which is badly sequenced with poor word processing or handwriting, frequent spelling mistakes and incorrect grammar will lose you marks. . 6 How to improve your style Remember anyone can improve their writing skills through hard work, constructive feedback and practice. Below are some key tips for improving your style. a) Work with a rough draft. Complete a rough draft and leave for a few days then re-read it or ask a friend to read it and make comments. This gives you time to reflect on your report. b) Avoid j argon. Never use jargon unless a) it saves words and b) your readers will understand it. c) Keep it clear and straightforward. A good style is one which is clear and concise so the reader can easily follow it. Useful Tips Always check your work. Before you hand in any work, be it an assignment or an exam script, check it for errors in accuracy such as spelling and punctuation, readability and flow and clarity of structure Avoid plagiarism. You know the penalties (see the plagiarism section in the Academic Development module on Moodle) A CHALLENGE: when you have written your draft copy go through it and see if you can remove 25% of the words without changing the meaning. 11 6 6. 1 DATA PRESENTATION Introduction We have already mentioned the value of tables and diagrams in saving words. They also help to make your message clear. However, they will only do this if the data is accurate and properly presented in the text. Some simple guidelines on this follow. 6. 2 Tables or Figures? â€Å"A picture is worth a thousand words† All material in your report that is not prose is called either a figure or a table (although photographs are known as plates). Figures include diagrams, graphs and charts. Figures are to be preferred to tables and prose, especially when complex relationships are involved. Tables are necessary when it is important to know exactly what the numbers are. Figures There are many different ways of presenting information as figures. Which one you choose depends on the purpose of the figures, and the nature of the data. Again, there are a number of important rules in presenting data in figures. Some ideas can be found in Figure 2. Tables There are different types of tables for different purposes. Usually tables in reports are intended to demonstrate or support a particular point being made in the text. They therefore need to be designed to fulfil this purpose. A few guidelines on the presentation of demonstration tables are given in Table X in Figure 3. . 3 The Use of Tables and Figures in Reports Numbering In technical reports tables and figures (Table 1–n and Figure 1-n) should be numbered in sequence to allow you to refer to them in the text. They have different purposes. A bibliography is a systematic list of sources of information on a particular subject which have been consulted although specific facts from them have not been cited in the text. References are the sources of information which have been cited in the text as evidence for statements and assertions. This section provides an introduction to the purpose of using references and the rules which govern their use. 7. 2 Why Use References? In higher education and research, unsupported assertions are not acceptable. In other words, you cannot simply say that something is so without providing supporting evidence. Evidence can be obtained or it can be provided by reference to writings of someone who has published such research or who is an acknowledged authority on the subject. Naturally, this does not apply when your assertion is something that is widely understood. It does, however, apply to anything that is new, little known or open to argument. If I said that Shropshire sheep have four legs I would not need to provide evidence. If I said that they have five legs there may be some who would doubt my word. In such a case I would need to provide evidence, either by doing research (counting the number of legs of randomised samples of the Shropshire sheep population), or by reference to the writing of an authority on this subject who had done such work. . 3 Citing References in the Text In order to draw the reader’s attention to the supporting evidence you simply write the surname of the author and the date of publication of the paper or book in the text. This can be done in more than one way, thus: â€Å"It has recently been shown that Shropshire sheep have five legs (Smith, 2012). † or â€Å"Smith (2012) recently demonstrated that Shropshire sheep have five legs. † The reader now knows that you have an authority for your statement. Steinbeck John Steinbeck A Common Man's Man ?I never wrote two books alike?, once said John Steinbeck (Shaw, 10). That may be true, but I think that he wrote many of his novels and short stories based on many of the same views. He often focused on social problems, like the ?haves? verses the ?have nots, and made the reader want to encourage the underdog. Steinbeck's back ground and concern for the common man made him one of the best writers for human rights. John Steinbeck was born in Salians, California and spent most of his life there or around Salians, because of that he often modeled his stories and the characters around the land he loved and the experiences he encountered. He lived in Salians until 1919, when he left for Stanford University, he only enrolled in the courses that pleased him - literature, creative writing and majoring in Marine Biology. He left in 1925, without a degree. Even though he didn't graduate his books showed the results of his five years spent there. His books display a considerable reading of the Greek and Roman historians, and the medieval and Renaissance fabalists and the biological sciences (Shaw 11). He then moved to New York and tried his hand as a construction worker and as a reporter for the American. (Covici , xxxv). Steinbeck then moved back to California and lived with his wife at Pacific Grove. In 1934, he wrote for the San Franciso News, he was assigned to write several articles about the 3,000 migrants flooded in at Kings County. The plight of the migrant workers motivated him to help and document their struggle. The money he earned from the newspaper allowed him to travel to their home and see why their reason for leaving and traveled to California with them, sharing in with their hardships (Steinbeck, 127). Because John Steinbeck was able to travel with the Okies, he was able to accurately portray them and their struggles. Each book that he wrote had settings in the places where he has either lived or wanted to live. He presented the land as it was. The characters in his stories experienced floods, drought, and other natural disasters, while in the Salians Valley (Shaw, 5). What Steinbeck wrote was very factual and in depth. He exhibited his awareness of man and his surroundings, in his early books, before people ate, a pig had to be slaughtered, and often that and before they ate, it had to be cooked. Also when a car broke down, the characters had to find parts, and fi xed it themselves (Shaw, 13). Many people consider that John Steinbeck novels are records of social history. His books are the history of plain people and society as a whole, many of his books focused on the Great Depression, Social Prejudice, religion, and the automobile (Rundell, 4). He may be considered as a Sentimentalist, because of his concerns for the common man, human values, for warmth and love and understanding. The social relevance of his writings reveals him as a reformer (Covici, xxii). In his novel The Pastures of Heaven, Steinbeck brings up the issues of Japanese Americans fitting into social groups, and in East of Eden, he examines the problems of intelligent and educated Chinese-Americans in the California setting. John Steinbeck only once seriously considers the problems of Negroes in Society. Crooks, the stable boy in Of Mice and Men, was an outcast and never destine to fit into the generally white society of ranching. Not only did Steinbeck recognize the -problems of minorities and racial prejudice, he also mentioned class prejudice. The difference between the ?haves? verses the ?have nots? was brought up in the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, usually the people who had any financial stability hated the Okies, who had none. Owners hated the Okies because they were soft and the Okies were strong, also the store keepers hated them because the Okies had no money to spend in their stores (Bowden, 12). Oliver fights with Noah Claypole, another of the undertakers boys, after Noah mocks Olivers dead mother. Oliver was treated badly by Noah Claypole and Mrs Sowerberry. It says, Mrs Sowerberry plunged into the kitchen, and assisted to hold him with one hand while she scratched his face with the other This emphasis the fact that Mrs Sowerberry is corrupt and unfair, because she didnt show any consideration of what Noah had said about Olivers dead mother. She didnt show any love towards Oliver to calm him down, as he was very hurt. This proves that society was cruel, corrupt and unfair because young innocent children like Oliver were physically abused. They couldnt do anything about it, all they could do was hope that it would stop or theyd runaway. Oliver had to attend funerals with the Sowereberrys, this was part of Olivers job this was a daily routine for him. He was to watch young children get buried; this was unfair, as Oliver is young and therefore shouldnt have to be forced to do these jobs. Corruptness is shown when Oliver was made to sleep amongst other coffins, which is rather disturbing and very cruel. As some of the coffins may have had dead bodies still in the coffins waiting to get buried the next day. This was a very nasty thing to do to anybody especially young, nai ve and gullible children. Oliver wasnt any better off than other boys who became chimney sweeps. Because the boys who became chimney sweeps inhale smoke, this wasnt very good for your health. However, he was better off than other orphans, who became chimney sweeps because this was very dangerous job particularly for young children. People who did not work in the workhouses saw asking for more food as a sin. Oliver says, Please Sir I want some more. This means that Oliver was still hungry but there was no sympathy towards Oliver from the Beadle and Mrs. Mann. To them it showed that he was being ungrateful and ill-mannered. Mr. Bumble and Mrs. Mann are corrupt, because they do not show any love and care for the people in the workhouses. Dickens shows this by the actions Mr. Bumble used to discipline; he locked Oliver in a cupboard for asking for more food and Dick was locked in there too for being greedy for more gruel.

3 Stoic Strategies For Becoming Happier Stoicism was one of the most important philosophical schools in ancient Greece and Rome.   It has also been one of the most influential.   The writings of Stoic thinkers like Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius have been read and taken to be heart by scholars and statesman for two thousand years. In his short but extremely readable book A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy (Oxford University Press, 2009), William Irvine argues that Stoicism is a admirable and coherent philosophy of life.  Ã‚   He also claims that many of us would be happier if we became Stoics.   This is a remarkable claim.   How can the theory and practice of a philosophical school founded fifteen hundred years before the industrial revolution have anything relevant to say to us today, living in our constantly changing, technology dominated world? Irvine has many things to say in response to that question.   But the most interesting part of his answer is his account of specific strategies that the Stoics recommend we all use on a daily basis.   Three of these in particular are especially important: negative visualization; internalization of goals; and regular self-denial. Negative visualization Epictetus recommends that when parents kiss a child goodnight, they consider the possibility that the child might die during the night.   And when you say goodbye to a friend, say the Stoics, remind yourself that you perhaps you will never meet again. Along the same lines, you might imagine the home you live being destroyed by fire or by a tornado, the job you rely on being eliminated, or the beautiful car you have just bought being crushed by a runaway truck. Why entertain these unpleasant thought?   What good can come from this practice of what Irvine calls â€Å"negative visualization†?   Well, here are a few possible benefits of imagining the worst that can happen: Anticipating misfortunes can lead you to take preventative measures.   E.g. Imagining your family dying of carbon monoxide poisoning may prompt to you install a carbon monoxide detector.If you have already imagined how something awful might happen, if it does occur you will less shocked.   We are all familiar with this on a mundane level.   Many people, if they take an exam, imagine or even convince themselves that they have done badly so that if it turns out that this is the truth, they will be less disappointed.   Negative visualization, here and elsewhere, prepares us mentally and emotionally to deal with unpleasant experiences when they arrive–as they inevitably will.Contemplating the loss of something helps us to appreciate it more fully.   We are all familiar with the way we have a tendency to take things for granted.   When we first buy a new house, car, guitar, smart phone, shirt, or whatever, we think it’s wonderful.   But within a fairly short ti me the novelty wears off and we no longer find it exciting, or even interesting.   Psychologists call this â€Å"hedonic adaptation.† But imagining the loss of the thing in question is a way of refreshing our appreciation of it.   It’s a technique that help us to follow Epictetus’ advice and learn to want what we already have. Of these arguments for practicing negative visualization, the third is probably the most important and the most convincing.   And it goes well beyond such things as newly purchased technology. There is so much in life to be grateful for, yet we often find ourselves complaining that things aren’t perfect.   But anyone reading this article is probably living the sort of life that most people through history would have viewed as inconceivably pleasant.   Little need to worry about famine, plague, war, or brutal oppression.   Anesthetics; antibiotics; modern medicine; instant communication with anyone anywhere; the ability to get to just about anywhere   in the world in a few hours; a vast amount of great art, literature, music, and science available through the internet at the touch a of key.   The list of things to be grateful for is almost infinite.   Negative visualization reminds us that we are â€Å"living the dream.† Internalization of goals We live in a culture that puts tremendous value of worldly success.   So people strive to get into elite universities, to make lost of money, to create a successful business, to become famous, to achieve high status in their work, to win prizes, and so on.   The problem with all these goals, though, is that whether or not one succeeds depends in large part on factors outside one’s control. Suppose your goal is to win an Olympic medal.   You can commit yourself to this goal entirely, and if you have enough natural ability you may make yourself one of the best athletes in the world.   But whether or not you win a medal depends on many things, including who you are competing with.   If you happen to be competing against athletes who have certain natural advantages over you–e.g. physiques and physiologies better suited to your sport–then a medal may simply be beyond you.   The same goes for other goals, too.   If you want to become famous as a musician, it isn’t enough just to make great music.   Your music has to reach the ears of millions of people; and they have to like it.   These are not matters you can easily control. For this reason the Stoics advise us to carefully distinguish between things that lie within our control and things that lie beyond our control.   Their view is that we should focus entirely on the former.   Thus, we should concern ourselves with what we choose to strive for, with being the kind of person we want to be, and with living according to sound values.   These are all goals that depend entirely on us, not on how the world is or how it treats us. Thus, if I’m a musician, my goal shouldn’t be to have a number one hit, or to sell a million records, to play at Carnegie Hall or to perform at the Super Bowl.   Instead, my goal should just be to make the best music I can within my chosen genre.   Of course, if I try to do this I will increase my chances of public recognition and worldly success.   But if these don’t come my way, I won’t have failed, and I shouldn’t feel especially disappointed.   For I will still have achieved the goal I set myself. Practicing self-denial The Stoics argue that sometimes we should deliberately deprive ourselves of certain pleasures.   For example, if we usually have dessert after a meal, we might forego this once every few days; we might even once in a while substitute bread, cheese and water for our normal, more interesting dinners.   The Stoics even advocate subjecting oneself to voluntary discomfort.   One might, for instance, not eat for a day, underdress during cold weather, try sleeping on the floor, or take the occasional cold shower. What is the point of this kind of self-denial?   Why do such things?   The reasons are actually similar to the reasons for practicing negative visualization.   Self-denial toughens us up, so that if we have to deal with involuntary hardship or discomfort we will be able to do so.   There is really a very familiar idea.   It is why the army makes boot camp so hard.   The thinking is that if soldiers become accustomed to hardship on a regular basis, they will cope better with it when being able to do so really matters.   And this sort of thinking by military leaders goes back at least to ancient Sparta.   Indeed, the militaristic Spartans were so convinced that depriving men of luxuries made them better soldiers that this sort of denial came to be integral to their whole way of life.   Even today, the word â€Å"Spartan† means lacking luxuries.Self-denial helps us to appreciate the pleasures, comforts and conveniences that we enjoy all the time and are in danger of taking for granted.   Most of will probably agree with this–in theory!   But the problem with putting the theory into practice, of course, is that the experience of voluntary discomfort is––uncomfortable.   Still, perhaps some awareness of the value of self-denial is part of the reason why people choose to go camping, or backpacking. But are the Stoics right? The arguments for practicing these Stoic strategies sound very plausible.   But should they be believed?   Will negative visualization, internalizing goals, and practicing self-denial really help us to be happier?   The most likely answer is that it depends to some extent on the individual.   Negative visualization may help some people to appreciate more fully the things they presently enjoy.   But it could lead to others becoming increasingly anxious over the prospect of losing what they love.   Shakespeare, in Sonnet 64, after describing several examples of Time’s destructiveness, concludes: Time hath taught me thus to ruminateThat Time will come and take my love away.This thought is as a death, which cannot chooseBut weep to have that which it fears to lose. The internalization of goals seems very reasonable on the face of it: do your best, and accept the fact that objective success depends on factors you can’t control.   Yet surely, the prospect of objective success–an Olympic medal; making   money; having a hit record; winning a prestigious prize–can be tremendously motivating.   Perhaps there are some people who care nothing for such external markers of success; but most of us do.   And it’s surely true that many wonderful human achievements have been fueled, at least in part, by the desire for them. Self-denial is not especially appealing to most people.   Yet there is som reason to suppose that it really does do us the sort of good that the Stoics claimed for it.   A well-known experiment done by Stanford psychologists in the 1970s involved having young children see how long they could hold off eating a marshmallow for the sake of getting an additional reward (such as a cookie in addition to the marshmallow).   The surprising upshot of the research was that those individuals who were best able to delay gratification did better in later life on a number of measures such as educational achievement and general health.   This seems to bear out will power is   like a muscle, and that exercising the muscle through self-denial builds self-control, a key ingredient of a happy life.

There was an objective: to resolve what it must have been like for Jesus as a human who was struggling with his divinity and his humanity. Throughout the film, Jesus was depicted as a Messiah who constantly questioned and doubted. The primary thesis was that Jesus was human and must have grappled with human frailties because - it is assumed - that it was part of his purpose. In order to resolve Scorsese’s goals, the director had to answer Jesus’ initial attitude towards his divinity and how he came to terms with it. In the process, he had to break away from the traditional tone and setting of previous Jesus-films. For instance, in his depiction of one of the temptations, the devil was presented in a suit that somehow resembled a modern-day CEO or even a preaching evangelical. The novel Our Guys, written by Bernard Lefkowitz, is a very dynamic story about the heinous actions of a dozen middle-class athletes, from a small New York suburb, against a defenseless mentally handicapped girl. Lefkowitz describes a brutal gang rape involving a baseball bat and broomhandle, which took place in this unsuspecting town, by these upstanding young group of boys, as the town would describe them. Lefkowitz looks at the incident which took place and then examines the â€Å"jock clique† sub-culture that allowed such atrocities to happen, and spawned the scandal to cover it up. The town of Glenridge is at the surface not any different than any other surburban American town. Like most towns it has its â€Å"cliques† and the â€Å"jocks† are at the pinnacle of the town. Idolized by the students and a sourse of pride for the entire town, however the Glenridge boys were not like most high school athletes. The â€Å"Jock clique† formed at a very early age,and invaded their surroundings taking over where ever they went, whether it be school, games or around town, protected by the â€Å"boys will be boys† attitude held by the rest of the town. The boys started showing signs of beligerance as early as elementary school, with a common ignorance for authority. The group was later easily passed through middle school to relieve the teachers of another year enduring the â€Å"problem† class. Once in high scholl the boys became the leaders of the school, andpride of the town. In Glenridge sports were valued higher than academics, turning these young men into heros, and everyone else into nobodies. There was not anything anyone could do to derail this movement, nor did they try to. Glenridges attitude towards women was very outdated. Women were regarded as mothers and wives, their jobs weere to make the men of the town happy. They were treated as objects and rarely held positions of authority-there were not any women mentors, therefore everyone lokked up to their fathers and saw that men were the supreme beings. Most of the boys did not even have any female influences other than their mothers; infact only two of the boys involved had sisters, Bryan Grober and Phil Grant. Thes boys were raised in dressing rooms by males and taught to respect the institute and brotherhood of a team. That if they respected their sacred bond they could do anything. Nothing was more important than the team or eac... ... athletes to do as they please. However he does not do a good job of being non-partisan. He leads his readers to believe the only group of people who would do such things are â€Å"jocks†. This bias is not true. The newspapers report that University fraternities, and secret societies are as likely, if not more likely, to commit these very same acts. He also leads the reader to believe that all athletes and athletic teams are similar. The impression he leaves about the majority of teams and their members is prejudicial and unfair. It is very unfortunate and disheartening that members of a community that were so highly reguarded, would commit such acts. It is even more disturbing to hear about the scenario leading up to the rape, and the community which produced these troubled young men. It is more important to look at why the events took place rather than who committed them, because ultimately the only innocent person involved is the victim, a mentally handicapped young gir l, named Lesli Faber. This book shows that the community is to blame when tragedies like these occur, and that if it happened in Glen ridge, what is to stop it from happening in our own back yard by â€Å"our guys†?

Essay One Description and Narration Essay

Anyone who has ever achieved anything has had to face many obstacles to accomplish their goals. But what defines their success is never how many obstacles stand in their way, but how many obstacles they overcome. Even though I might have to overcome many tough obstacles in order to become a police officer, I believe that it is important to protect the public and prevent crime. In order to gain a position in the police force, I will have to pass various examinations, such as a written exam that will be based on correct wording, grammar, spelling and punctuation. In my opinion, this exam seems pretty easy because I am good in language arts and reading. Perhaps whenever it comes my time to take this examination, I will ace it. The police academy training also prepares police officers for active duty. The training probably has to be the hardest obstacle for me because it requires intense physical workouts. The first week in training I will have to run, and do calisthenics, which consists of push-ups, crunches, and jumping jacks. I will also have to use the medicine ball to do sit-ups, twist and hand offs, curls presses and extended workouts. Each week I will have to do the sets and reps for these physical workouts and each week the exercises double , so I will have to do double the work. Finding the job as a police officer will definitely be the second hardest obstacle. There will be a lot of competition in order for me to get into police training. In the past, becoming a police officer was not as difficult as it is today. One of the  main reasons that getting a police officer jobs is more difficult now, is that there are many more applicants than there used to be. Once I am a police officer, I can move into other areas like drug investigation. If I become a drug investigator I will have to have five or more years of police experience. Police dog services, also known as K9’s is another advancement that I am interested. As K-9 handler I must be able to perform specific tasks with my dog, such as bomb and narcotic detection, human tracking, and finding hidden objects. Or even an explosives disposal technician, which are specialized in training to handle chemical, biological and even nuclear weapons. Out of all these three options, the main one that catches my attention has to be a drug investigator. Hopefully when I have a lot of experience in the police force I can work my way up and become a drug investigator or even a police k-9. It will also be personally gratifying to protect the public.
